James Aitken

James Aitken

James Aitken’s work is focused on the remote, where his plein air journeys have taken him across hundreds of kilometres into rugged, beautiful Ontario places. His landscapes include scenes from Georgian Bay, Lake Superior and his James Bay adventures immersed in the Boreal forest of black spruce, birch, and balsam. Aitken lives and works near Collingwood, where he “finds inspiration through isolation.” Aitken attended the Academy of Art Canada (Toronto) where he studied landscape and oil painting techniques. He is currently the Chair of the Onakawana Education Fund which paves the way for Ontario youth to visit Camp Onakawana on the Abitibi River and learn traditional First Nations land-based knowledge. Aitken’s newly-opened Coventry Art Studio & Gallery, a converted Hudson’s Bay Company trading post located in Nottawa, is dedicated to promoting Canadian landscape art.
