Gary McGuffin

Gary McGuffin creates images that inspire people to reconnect with the natural world. He is an award-winning photographer, author, conservationist, and adventurer whose remarkable 40-year partnership with his wife Joanie has spawned 8 best-selling books and hundreds of articles on nature and wildlife photography, wilderness exploration and conservation.

McGuffin is most fulfilled when he is working at the intersection of his landscape photography and creative conservation solutions. He loves providing the spark and tending the fire around which fellow travellers and artists gather to collaborate to better our relationship with nature. Commencing in May 2023, McGuffin’s photography will provide the central focus for a 5-year, 15-city Smithsonian Institute travelling exhibition Knowing Nature: Stories of the Boreal Forest. Gary is a founder of the Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy, an international non-profit devoted to supporting the vitality of the Lake Superior watershed through conservation, education and active participation.

Gary and Joanie live on a 300-acre nature preserve in the Algoma Highlands overlooking Lake Superior.
